“.. Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.”

(2Samuel 9:7 KJV)

David sent people to Lo-debar to fetch Mephibosheth, not because of who Mephibosheth was, but because of a covenant David had with his father, David was saying in effect “I covenanted that I will preserve Jonathan’s seed and so, you will sit with me on the table and eat in spite of your leprosy (inadequacy)”.

Take a moment to think of it. David, a mere man understood covenant and after the death of Jonathan. In spite of the evil planned against him by Saul, notwithstanding he asked; “is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake? (2 Sam. 9:1). Notice he did not even say any of the house of Jonathan but house of Saul. The covenant with Jonathan was so strong that it extended to the entire household of Saul, the man who wanted to kill him. If David did that, how much more God.

Your covenant with God was ratified by the blood of His Only Son, Jesus Christ. There is no bigger covenant. Like many believers, Mephibosheth was consumed with his challenges so found it difficult to take in the favour extended to him. Beloved, there is a place on the table with your name on it because of covenant.

The reason you have been in and out of sin is because you have refused to come to the table. Come to the table which has been bought for you with the blood of Jesus. When you come to the table and your heart is filled with love for Him, your response will automatically be a sin-free life. You will be so consumed with pleasing Him that when you miss it, you get so uncomfortable that you run to Him. Don’t fight what He has made available to you; rejoice in it.
